Binary individuals, human minds translated (via algorythms of varying fidelity and marketing) to completely digitized forms resembling AIs. The highest-quality of these---the good BIs---indeed strongly resemble their corporeal beginnings.
Most (trillions) are housed in vast banks in the Sahara and live lives of great adventure and personal & social development. Their accomplishments and cultural innovations are cherry-pciked by the wet humans to guide society a lot like Black culture currently guides much of that of the US. And similarly, the rest of their electirc lives are discounted by those with the actual hands to make a difference.
Still, some of the best good BIs are migrated to the outside. Some that replicate luminary figures or especially beloved grandmas are kept by wet humans to be part of the dirty world.
