Based on the findings from the two psychometric articles (Gigliotti and Samuels, 2011; Gigliotti and colleagues, 2014) we revised the NSSQ. These two articles are available for free download at the bottom of the Original NSSQ web page.

Specifically, the Revised NSSQ includes the following changes:
A changed format was also evaluated but, as detailed in the attached paper "Tests of Revisions to the NSSQ", the original format generated more accurate scores.
Scoring the Revised NSSQ
Below you will also find:
1. The revised scoring sheet
2. A clean copy of an SPSS data file set up for you to input the NSSQ data with the n/a option
3. the SPSS syntax needed for the creation of averaged sub scores when the n/a option is used.
Note that you must be in SPSS in order to open the data and syntax files

Specifically, the Revised NSSQ includes the following changes:
- A "not applicable" (n/a) category was added to allow participants to refrain from rating any network member on any of the 6 social support questions. This allows participants to temporarily "drop" a network member if they feel the question does not pertain to them. For example, one might wish to list one's children as network members but feel the questions about agreeing/confiding do not pertain to this relationship.
- The aid questions were revised by deleting the examples.
A changed format was also evaluated but, as detailed in the attached paper "Tests of Revisions to the NSSQ", the original format generated more accurate scores.
